what is the origin of an amber stone?

my boyfriend is crazy collecting precious stones and one of them is amber coz it's the first stone he gave me. I was just wondering how it originated...can someone tell me?

Amber is the fossilized resin from prehistoric trees. Amber comes in various shades from clear honey color to swirly opaque butterscotch look.
It must be much more than 2 million years old to be called true amber.
Most of the world's commercial amber comes from one of two locations. Baltic amber from Europe or Dominican amber from Dominican Republic. Both are older than 20 million years.
Your boyfriend would probably know which type it was.
Your amber may even have small inclusions such as insects trapped in it though this is rare. If so, you can consider it a valuable gift.
Though baltic amber is slightly older and more popular among europeans, dominican amber has yielded many of the worlds finest fossil inclusions.

Hope this helps
